چکیده

Sheared toroidal flows with a magnitude of the order of the sound speed are shown to stabilize sawteeth in tokamaks. In the absence of flows, tokamak equilibria in which the central safety factor q is less than unity are unstable to resistive tearing modes ~resistive internal kink modes! with toroidal mode number n51. As the ratio b of the plasma pressure to the magnetic field pressure increases, the growth rate of the n51 mode rises because of the increasing pressure gradient. However, the addition of a toroidal flow to the equilibrium has a stabilizing effect. As the magnitude of the toroidal flow approaches the sound speed, the n51 resistive tearing mode can be completely stabilized by the flow, eliminating sawteeth. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1485974#

The goal of magnetic confinement devices such as tokamaks is to produce energy from nuclear fusion reactions in plasmas at low densities and high temperatures. Experimentally, toroidal flows have been found to significantly improve the energy confinement, and therefore the performance of the machine. As extrinsic momentum sources will be limited in future fusion devices such as ITER, an underst...

Resistive toroidal stability of internal kink modes in circular and shaped tokamaks

The linear resistive magnetohydrodynamical stability of the n= 1 internal kink mode in tokamaks is studied numerically. The stabilizing influence of small aspect ratio [Holmes et al., Phys. Fluids B 1, 788 (1989)] is confirmed, but it is found that shaping of the cross section influences the internal kink mode significantly. For finite pressure and small resistivity, curvature effects at the q=...

Numerical Simulations of Sawteeth in Tokamaks

Numerical simulations of sawteeth in tokamaks have been carried out using reduced magnetohydrodynamics and a simple transport model. The electron temperature is evolved self-consistently, including Ohmic heating and a highly anisotropic thermal diffusivity. The sawtooth period and collapse time found in the simulations for Lundquist numbers S below 10 compare favourably with experimental result...

Numerical Studies and Simulation of the Lower Hybrid Waves Current Drive by using Fokker – Planck Equation in NSST and HT-7 Tokamaks

Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...

Magnetic Topology Effects on Alcator C-Mod Flows

The effect of magnetic topology on ion and impurity flows in a tokamak is considered by investigating the consequences of (i) the reversal of toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields and currents, (ii) a switch from lower to upper X-point operation, (iii) poloidal magnetic field or plasma current reversal, and (iv) toroidal magnetic field reversal. The general symmetries associated with magnetic t...
